Authorities said Wednesday a man from the United Kingdom was arrested following an altercation aboard a British Airways flight that caused the plane to make an emergency landing at Boston’s Logan Airport.
Massachusetts State Police have charged Darren Halliwell, 48, of Aspull, Greater Manchester, England with interfering with a flight crew after he allegedly assaulted a woman onboard British Airways Flight 195 from London to Houston, authorities told the Boston Herald.
Additional charges may be brought against Halliwell.
A source told MyFoxBoston that a heavily-intoxicated Halliwell punched his wife while aboard the flight, which was then diverted to Logan, where Halliwell was arrested around 12:45 p.m. local time.
At the time of the incident, Halliwell was so inebriated that he was unable to walk on his own, MyFoxBoston reported.
“This sort of behaviour (sic) will not be tolerated,” British Airways said in a statement released Wednesday, “Our customers and crews deserve to enjoy their flights, and not to suffer any form of abuse.”
“The Captain took the decision to divert the aircraft to Boston. The matter will now be handled by the police.”
After Halliwell’s arrest, the plane continued on to Texas, the Herald reported..
His arraignment is scheduled for Thursday in East Boston District Court.
