Americans are just plain lousy at taking vacation.
And it’s not just because the U.S. is one of the few countries that doesn’t guarantee paid days off.
One in four working Americans get no paid time off, according to the Center for Economic and Policy Research.
In comparison, workers in France are given 31 days of paid time off, Japan: 10 days, Italy: 31 days and Canada: 19.
Even when we’re eligible for days, we don’t take them.
Seventy-five percent of employees with paid time off didn’t take all their vacation in 2013, according to employment site Glassdoor.
Glassdoor says it’s because people are afraid of being away from the workplace, worried that no other employee could do the job or that they could lose their job when out of the office.
And even on vacation, we’re constantly checking email and voicemail. It’s no wonder that 1 in 10 travelers claim they can’t relax while on vacation, according to Happify.
